Alcala’s has been around for as long as I can remember. How could you not notice the giant horse out front? As a kid all I wanted to do was jump on that thing, still, never have and probably never will because I’d probably take the thing down. I even remember back in 2014 when the owner, Luis Alcala died. I was so shocked to hear it I looked up his name to see how old he was to learn that he was 92 years old. I was even happier to learn that he left the store to his grandchild because I think it’s a staple of the northwest side. Even if the shop closed, which I hope it never does, I don’t think they can take that horse away. It should be a landmark.
